Art is the language through which she communicates her deepest truths. As a Puerto Rican artist living in Atlanta, her work bridges the gap between her cultural roots and personal identity. In every piece, she explores the vibrant blend of Puerto Rican heritage and the diversity of Atlanta. Each brushstroke is an honest reflection of who she is, bringing her unspoken emotions to life. For her, art isn’t just a form of expression; it’s a statement of existence, a fearless celebration of self, and an invitation for others to connect with her stories. Arturo Contreras
Arturo Contreras is a queer Mexican-American interdisciplinary scholar and multidisciplinary Latine creative based in Atlanta. Transitioning from a rural, working-class life to an urban lifestyle, he became fascinated by cultural institutions as tools for community formation. His involvement in Emory and Atlanta's Latine communities fostered his creative praxis, leading him to discover a passion for creative directing/curating and photography. As a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow during his undergrad career, Arturo began his artistic career curating Emory University's first student-led Latinx exhibition, “Consciousness is Power: A Record of Latinx Emory.” This experience solidified his interest in documenting underrepresented histories. He delved into photography and began to develop his skills first solo, and then alongside a group of local Latine photographers in Atlanta. His 2023 summer and fall films are with personal family and friends that started with landscape and portrait shots of familiar connections across the US and Mexico. Carla Contreras
Driven by an unconscious search for the familiar and a sense of belonging through contemplative practices in nature, I have situated myself as an intimate and playful neighbor of the forest and the river next-door for the past few years. The Chattahoochee River in Roswell, Ga, and sporadic visits to Papallacta, Ecuador -a biodiverse cloud forest region in my hometown- have therefore informed my body of work since 2020. I have been observant of nature ́s mechanisms and transitions, its resilience and pace, the speed and the quietness, the flourishing of orderly and diverse phenological patterns…What remains within never-ending mutation cycles? What persists? These abstract mixed media works become a biomorphic multi-perspective assemblage of sensorial and affective information gathered from two specific river sites, those who have awakened intuitive and old childlike practices, as well as quotidian pursuits of home traces in nature ́s drifts. Nationality: Ecuadorian Pieces: Flor de Gunnera & Luna de Monte IG: @carla.contreras.art WEB: carlacontreras.net

Litumaism is born out of a combination of themes revolving around history, culture, myths, love, and struggle. Gabriel A. Guzmán
Gabriel Guzmán is a queer and trans non-binary Latinx scholar-artist hailing from San Diego (SD) and Tijuana (TJ). Gabriel is currently a PhD candidate in Northwestern University’s Performance Studies department whose dissertation project looks at how the aesthetic embodiments of race, gender, and sexuality across the everyday experiences of LGBTQ+ communities of color informs the notion of home and belonging beyond the SD/TJ borderlands. Gabriel's artistic practices are rooted in the sonic and the visual which span mediums such as: creating performances that draw from their inherited Latinx curandero background, sound collaging, and film photography centering queer home-building, domestic spaces+objects, and kinship across queer nightlife contexts and friendship. The selected film photos are part of a series about home titled, “Recuerdos TransFormterizas”, that aims to gather and share the affective experiences of communities of color navigating home between borders, particularly between San Diego (SD) and Tijuana (TJ) border region. Recuerdos invites us to reconsider the spatiality of home by disrupting the borders between the personal and the political, geography and place, the photographer and subject. Here, photography produces a visual archive of minoritarian storytelling rooted in community-building and self-fashioning that remains largely absent from hegemonic narratives about the U.S-Mexico borderlands. Across these photos are celebratory moments and gatherings of everyday life and joy that showcase what queer and trans of color presence and friendship builds upon— where home is across the places, spaces, and people we call home, and our futurity is layered across nuestros (our) recuerdos (memories). My work with film photography emerges as a practice of feeling for home across these stories that amplify moments of collectivity and belonging. When we listen and dream alongside these photos, may we bear witness to the layered sensaciónes of queer and trans of color life and everyday performances of friendship. Nationality: Mexican Pieces: August Virgo (birthday cake) & “Recuerdos TransFormterizas" series IG: @duckiegabe

Leylis MR
I paint to soak people's mind into a parallel conscious for introspection and self-retrospection. My works depict a mixture of all human feelings about love, fears, fragility, faith, hope... An endless list of sensations to be tasted in a blink. My art represents the interior of humanity and as a consequence, its cultural reflection. It gets materialized through the human body's shape and folklore allegories immersed in free elements of dance and poetry. The previous mentioned gives access to anthropology, psychology, sociology, metaphysics and the ethereal oneiric world itself. It intends to reveal the beauty and core of human interior placed on a timeline of our society and its "peculiarities". Viewers experience a revival of what we as humans tend to acknowledge, restrain, ignore, regret or love. Nationality: Peruvian Piece: Collage of a Sentiment IG: @leylismr.art WEB: leylismrart.com

Luciana Vinci
When developing my paintings, I think about how little I remember of my life in Argentina before I immigrated and how disconnected I sometimes feel from my motherland. My current self-portraits are a reaction to this thought. I convey feelings of loss, longing, and even reconnection. While I maintain some realism in my paintings, replications often have inconsistencies. My use of color is typically the most significant thing I alter. Instead of staying true to the colors on the reference pictures, I opt for brighter colors. Table settings are seen consistently throughout my artwork. Many memories with my family revolve around food and sitting at a table. The connection made with someone when you sit together and share a meal or conversation is intimate. Ultimately, I hope that if I continue to develop more work, I can bridge the gap between the two cultures and my present and past self. Roberto Rafael Navarrete
I was raised to always seek guidance and comfort from our shamans, curanderos, and our Saints. As a culture, we are encouraged from making any references towards our spiritual practice to protect us. As a queer, this became extremely difficult for me to accept given that it is the main inspiration for my life and practice as a creator. I feel an enormous responsibility to utilize my talent, voice, and experience through my artwork as I strive to express positivity while refusing to keep any part of my identity closeted. Shamans are the mediators between the spiritual and the physical realms or portals. They are the chosen few that are selected to be a direct link to guide us and I believe that artists also create between worlds. We tap into creative energy that we viscerally feel and then imbue our work with that energy. Artists imagine or see what we are meant to create and are gifted enough to materialize that idea. Making us both, Artist and Shaman. I became fixated in creating realms where the shaman taps into spiritual energy to help us heal internally from our conflict. I obsessed over our body’s healing and transitioning as our curanderos heal us. What does this look like internally as our body heals and evolves from this energy? I aim to make these installations an accessible representation of this world where the shaman resides as they heal us. Roberto Rafael Navarrete (He/They) (b. 1982) is an interdisciplinary first generation Peruvian-American artist working across photography, installation, sculpture, video and performance. Working with various species of wood his entire life and researching the knotted language of his Inca ancestors has had a significant influence on Navarrete's work throughout his career as this introduced his passion for knots. In 2015, Navarrete received The Graduate Teaching Assistantship at Florida Atlantic University and The Community Engagement Initiative Grant 2018. He lived in South Florida from 2015 to 2020 where he received his Masters in Fine Arts (2018) at Florida Atlantic University with a focus in Painting, Photography and Mixed Media Installations. Navarrete currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia. NationalIty: Peruvian Pieces: Aché & Communion IG: @luzdeluna82 WEB: robertorafaelnavarrete.com
Santi Saucedo
I create intimately scaled figurines inspired by my dual Spanish and Mezoamerica heritage. Growing up as a Mexican American in a Catholic household small sculptures always decorated my family homes. Particularly significant figures came out during religious celebrations. There was a clear connection between our nativity scenes, Mary’s and king cake Christs, and the ancient stone figures that remind us of the ancient history of Mexico. My work attempts to fill a deeply human need to imbue objects, especially small objects we can hold, with profound significance to help us process the parts of reality we experience internally. A figure to ward off misfortune, attract love, increase fertility, honor traditions, inspire virtues, or simply a vessel to channel your prayers and meditations. My work aims to bridge the gap from ancient forms to contemporary sculpture while retaining the intimate sensation figurines can bring out in a viewer. Nationality: Mexicano Pieces: Dogman , Eddie Gordo , & Sunswallower IG: @santi.s.art WEB: santisaucedo.com
Sarah Osorio
Sarah’s work explores the complex dynamics of vulnerability, self-worth, and the often harsh realities of validation. The figures in her pieces are portrayed in moments of intense emotional conflict, where every glance and gesture is imbued with significance. Whether capturing the silent tension of a crowded room, the introspective solitude of a woman lost in thought, or the defiant yet uncertain stance of someone navigating societal expectations, Sarah’s compositions invite viewers to delve deeper into the complexities of human experience. Her use of light and shadow accentuates the emotional turmoil within each scene, emphasizing the contrast between public personas and private struggles. The recurring motifs of mirrors, reflective surfaces, and intense gazes speak to her ongoing exploration of identity—how it’s shaped, manipulated, and often distorted by external pressures and internal battles. In her work, there is a strong focus on the fragility of human connections and the silent battles waged in the hearts of those who appear to have it all together on the surface. Sarah’s choice of rich, warm tones juxtaposed with cooler hues heightens the tension, creating a palpable sense of unease as if each piece captures a moment just before something crucial changes. There is a cinematic quality to her work, with each painting feeling like a still from a larger narrative, compelling viewers to imagine the stories that unfold beyond the frame. At its core, Sarah’s art is a meditation on the multifaceted nature of identity and the universal experiences that bind us all. Her work challenges viewers to consider the ways in which they might be performing for an audience—whether real or imagined—and invites them to engage in a deeper dialogue about the nature of self-perception, the pressures of societal expectations, and the universal experiences that shape our collective human experience.
